Soccer in England… er… um… Football in England,
that is, is probably even more popular than fish and chips or warm
beer. It is probably even more popular than blood pudding or cricket.
It might even be more popular than the Queen of England herself!
It’s no wonder that soccer is so popular in England. Although
the English did not officially invent soccer (it is a sport that
has evolved over time and over continents), they are often credited
with this great feat. There are tales of Englishmen, back in the
day, kicking skulls around… but, soccer has been played on
many continents for many years, and the rules that we have today
have not evolved from just one continent.
Strangely, although they are credited with the invention of what
some would call the greatest sport in the world, the English have
won only one World Cup, in 1966, at Wembley stadium.
Although the English cannot claim many world cups, they have quite
a few rather famous soccer clubs that play throughout the region.
Manchester United Football Club is one of these famous clubs, and
one of the richest in the world, too. It’s no surprise that
Manchester United is famous, seeing as how they’ve won eight
coveted Premiership Titles, seven League Championships, and ten
FA Cups.
Even those who do not know much about soccer have likely heard
of Manchester United. And they most certainly have heard of David
Beckham, one of the most popular soccer players in the sport in
a long time. He is often in the news because of his great skills
as a soccer player, but he is also seen as somewhat of a sex idol,
even though he is married to former Spice Girl Victoria, aka “Posh”
Spice. His name even made it into the title of a popular movie,
Bend It Like Beckham.
