The governing body of soccer in Germany is the German Football Association.
It is based in Frankfurt and divided into five regional federations
with 21 regional organizations.
The German Football Association was founded in 1900 by the representatives
of 86 clubs. Those 86 clubs have expanded into the 26,000 clubs
that are members today. There are over 2 million active players,
and over 6 million members. It does not simply suffice to say that
soccer is popular in Germany – the German Football Association
has the largest membership of any sports federation in the world.
And the members are not, of course, made solely up of male players.
There are 870,000 female members and 8600 female soccer teams in
Germany.
As stated above, the German Football Association is made up of
five regional associations: north, west, south, southwest, and northeast.
Then there are the 21 sub-regional associations. The whole German
Football Association is very well planned and run. There are very
many people who are very dedicated to keep the German Soccer running
smoothly.
Professional soccer was introduced in Germany in 1963. The biggest
successes for the German national team are the three World Cup titles
that they hold (1954, 1974, 1990). That’s right! German soccer
holds 2 more titles than English soccer. They have also won three
European Championships (1972, 1980, 1996).
It is not just the German men that play soccer well. The German
Football Association women won their first World Cup title in the
USA in 2003 – there have only been a total of 3 women’s
World Cup championships held. They’ve also won 6 European
Championships and wer runners up to the World Cup in 1995. The German
soccer women even won the bronze medal at the Olympics in 200 and
also in 2004.
