As any intelligent person would know, Italians do more than eat
pastas and drink wines… they also play and watch soccer. The
Italian national soccer team is one of the most successful national
soccer teams.
While there are many teams out there that have never one a single
World Cup, Italy has gone and won three World Cups! They actually
won two World Cups in a row, one in 1934, and the
other in1938. Italy has also won the Olympic Gold Medal in soccer
in 1936 and two Bronze Medals, in 1928 and recently in 2004.
Although Italy has had a relative amount of great success, Italian
soccer has also had its share of tragedy. The Superga air disaster
happened in 1949. A plane crashed while carrying 18 players of the
Grande Torino (what the Torino Football Club was known as at that
time). The crash killed everyone on board. 31 people died. The crash
was the biggest tragedy in Italian sports history – it claimed
the lives of the legendary team that had won the Serie A title multiple
times (the Serie A is the top division of the Italian Football League,
the highest football league in Italy).
Italian soccer has continued to grow since this horrible event.
Even when the Italians have not won major trophies, they have played
remarkable, memorable games. Italian soccer is a favorite around
the world, not just in Italy. The light blue that the team wears
can be seen around the world on Italian soccer supporters.
