The
New England Revolution (also known as the Revs) is the Major League
Soccer (MLS) franchise shared by Boston, Massachusetts and Providence,
Rhode Island. The Revs currently play their home games at Gillette
Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. During the 1996 through 2001
seasons, they played their home games at the now-demolished Foxboro
Stadium.
The concept of bringing a professional soccer team to Massachusetts
was a natural idea when the framework of Major League Soccer was
being developed in the mid-1990s. The area had a stadium that was
not only equipped for the sport of soccer but also had a history
of hosting sensational soccer events
October 17, 1995, the New England Revolution was born having secured
Foxboro Stadium as its home venue and settling in as one of the
10 original organizations of Major League Soccer
Although the Revs have never won a major title, they came close
three times, reaching the US Open Cup final in 2001 and the MLS
Cup final in both 2002 and 2005, all times losing to the Los Angeles
Galaxy. Their 2002 MLS Cup appearance won them a spot in the 2003
CONCACAF Champions Cup, but lost their first matchup 5:3 on aggregate
after playing two games on the road to LD Alajuelense. They will
again face LD Alajuelense in the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup.
