The Scottish and the English have played international soccer longer
than any other nations in the world. They competed against each
other in the world’s first international soccer match in 1872.
The match ended 0-0. This was obviously not a World Cup match, seeing
has how there were only two teams in it, but it was the beginning
of international soccer as we know it today.
Scotland soccer is known not only for its great national team,
but also for its fans. Scotland has a wonderful group of traveling
support, called the Tartan Army. The Tartan Army was awarded the
nickname of “The World’s Friendliest Fans” during
the 1998 World Cup in France. They have also won other numerous
awards throughout the years from Fédération Internationale
de Football Association or FIFA (the international governing body
of soccer) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The Tartan Army a group of fantastic fans whom are all avid supporters
for their Scotland soccer team, but are still friendly in nature.
The Tartan Army has remained gracious and friendly even though the
Scottish national soccer team has done relatively poorly in recent
worlds – they have never got past the first round of a World
Cup.
Of course, not everyone will credit the Scottish soccer fans for
being so amicable by simple nature – they say that perhaps
they are so friendly because of the large amounts of alcohol that
is constantly swimming around in their bodies before, during, and
after a game.
So, the Tartan Army has won numerous awards, how about the Socttish
soccer team that they support? Scotland had been able to qualify
for eight World Cups. Alas, as mentioned before, they have never
gotten past the first round. The Scottish soccer team has not exactly
won a European Championship, either. Again, they’ve only made
it to the first round.
What some would call Scotland’s best soccer match was when
they managed to defeat the then FIFA world champions England in
1967. They played at Wembley Stadium with a final score of 3-2.
