If you are a man and you are looking for soccer cleats for men,
you are lucky. Yes, there are women’s soccer cleats out there,
but many of these are actually soccer cleats for men, made to look
“prettier.”
Of course, in truth, women should not be wearing soccer cleats
for men, they should be wearing ones made for women. This is because
men and women are different (no duh!).
There are, however, some excellent women’s soccer shoes that
do not fall under the category of “soccer cleats for men.”
These shoes are made on a narrower last. A last is the foot-shaped
form used when making shoes. On average, soccer cleats for men are
made on a B width last.
Another difference between soccer cleats for men and women is that
the heel of a woman’s cleat should be narrower than the forefront
width – women’s heels tend to much more narrow than
those of men. Typically, soccer cleats for men will have a width
at the forefront that is the same as that at the heel (D width is
average).
It is often suggested that women can wear men’s shoes my
simply converting their size into a men’s size – this
can be done by subtracting 1.5 from their numeric size. A woman
who is size 9 in women’s shoes would roughly be a size 7.5
in men’s sizes. Realize, though, that if a woman does wear
a pair of soccer cleats for men, the heel will be wider!
It is interesting how most sizing charts offer a guide on how to
change a women’s size to a men’s size, but you will
never see the opposite – a guide on how a man can add 1.5
to his numeric shoe size to wear women’s shoes!
However, a man who has narrow heels may, indeed want to try out
a pair of women’s cleats!
There are other differences between men and women, as well. Of
course, the difference between soccer cleats for men and those for
women do not often reflect these differences.
As aforementioned, women tend to have narrower heels, and narrower
feet in general. Also, women tend to be lighter – a man and
a woman might have the same size feet, but a woman could be around
20 pounds lighter. Because women are lighter, they need shoes with
greater flexibility (a higher mass flexes shoes automatically).
Another difference between men and women is in their hips. In fact,
men and women tend to have different centers of balance –
a woman’s center of balance is closer to her hips, and a man’s
center of balance is higher. This is because women tend to have
wider hips (and men tend to have wider shoulders…)
Because of the wider breadth of women’s hips, women’s
legs slant toward the ground at a greater angle form the hip than
men’s legs do. This means that the feet of women, when they
are running, will strike the ground toward the outer portion of
the shoe soles compared to men. This can lead to an inward-rolling
(pronation).
Some of these differences between men and women have been met by
the shoe industry, but others have not. In general, there are not
as many differences between soccer cleats for men and those made
for women as they can be.
