Soccer
coaching is a task that is more difficult than you can imagine until
you have actually experienced a season in the coach’s shoes!
The tasks and responsibilities involved with soccer coaching are
varied and sometimes hard to define, when it comes to the individual
players.
In many youth soccer organizations, soccer coaching is a volunteer
position usually taken up by one of the parents. Requiring many
hours of planning, soccer coaching is extremely time consuming when
you consider every day practices, weekend games, and the tasks involved
outside of those events.
For those new to soccer coaching, it is not very difficult to find
plans for practices and sample drills. The challenging part comes
when you arrive at the field, and are faced with organizing the
players to perform the drills and to teach them the skills they
are supposed to learn from them. Once you have experienced a few
seasons of soccer coaching, the challenges remain the same, but
you know how to adapt and how to maintain the players’ attention
during practice, while still positively motivating them.
The generally accepted outline for a soccer practice in soccer
coaching is as follows:
- Warm-up, 5 minutes
- Individual activities and drills, 5-10 minutes
- Small group games, activities and/or drills 5-10 minutes
- Scrimmage 20 min
- Cool-down, 5 minutes
While soccer coaching is a challenging and difficult job, especially
when you are concerned about the improvement of your players and
the team as a whole, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing
the team spirit at the end of the season.
When it comes to professional soccer coaching, salaries vary from
$33,00 to $45,000 in Virginia. High school soccer coaching is typically
an extra pay check on top of normal teaching salaries; high school
coaches generally earn from $20,000 to $80,000.
