Most Everyone knows that soccer is a sport that you play with your
feet, not your hands. So why would soccer gloves be an important
piece of gear for a player to have? Why is there even gear out there
for a player’s hands when he should be thinking about his
feet?
Gloves are generally worn by goal-keepers, not field players. A
goal-keeper is the only one playing soccer who regularly gets to
use her hands without it being called foul. But even field players
may want to wear gloves.
It sounds like madness, I know, but there are a few reasons for
field players to wear gloves. For one, soccer is not only played
when it is warm and sunny out with birds chirping in the sky and
squirrels smiling on the sidelines. Soccer is played at those times,
yes, but it is also played when it is bitterly cold out and a player
is thankful that she can’t feel her foot impact the ball.
On these sorts of days, soccer gloves are necessary to keep a soccer
player warm. Do you have any idea how hard it is to concentrate
on a soccer game when your hands feel like they might break off
like icicles off of an eave?
Of course, while out on the field, there is no way that a player
wants to wearing his or her ski mittens. Those may be warm, but
they won’t help someone play soccer. A field player needs
to wear soccer gloves specifically made for soccer. Why? Don’t
forget about the throw-ins. Even field-players get to use their
hands sometimes – when the ball goes out of bounds and they
get to throw it back in.
This is a free pass, so it would be a shame if the ball slipped
out of the player’s hands and went to the other team. This
scenario is much less likely to happen if a soccer player is wearing
her soccer gloves. The fingertips and palms of soccer gloves are
generally made with a tacky material to help you control throw-ins.
Goal-keepers get to handle the ball relatively often. That is why
a goal-keeper may want to wear soccer gloves. Soccer gloves specially
designed for goalies are designed so that a goalie can get a better
grip on the ball, but they also cushion and protect the fingers,
palms, and joints from injury.
