It may seem strange, but soccer goalies play a different game than
other soccer players. Because of this, soccer goalkeepers require
a different uniform – goalkeeper uniforms differ from fingertip
to toe. Fore one thing, soccer goalie jerseys differ from the jerseys
that the rest of the team wears.
A soccer goalie jersey is a different color than the rest of the
team’s jerseys. In fact, a soccer goalie jersey must differ
in color from all of the jerseys out on the field, including those
of the other team.
Why are soccer goalie jerseys different?
They differ because the goalkeeper must be easily identifiable
to the refs – This is important because soccer goalies essentially
play under a different set of rules than the rest of the players.
Therefore, it needs to be obvious to any refs watching the game
which player is the goalkeeper – after all, it is not alright
for another player to pick up the ball!
Because soccer goalkeeper jerseys must differ from all other jerseys
on the field, it is possible to find some very wild and interesting
color combinations out there – a goalkeeper is allowed to
have a much more varied uniform. There is not set design or pattern
to goalkeeper shirts.
It is possible to find short-sleeved goalkeeper jerseys, and it
is possible to find long-sleeved goalkeeper jerseys that do not
have padded arms. But if you want to be fully protected as a goalie,
it is most definitely best to find a long-sleeved soccer goalie
jersey with padded elbows – this will help you protect your
arms and elbows as you dive for the ball.
Goalie jerseys can be expensive, though. So, if you are just starting
out or just playing for fun, you may choose to split the cost of
a jersey with another goalie on your team.
Soccer goalkeepers also wear special gloves that other players
do not have – these soccer goalie gloves protect the goalie’s
hand from impact with the ball (some even prevent the fingers from
bending backward too far), and they also help a goalie get a better
grip on the ball (obviously, field players do not need such gloves
– they very rarely are allowed to touch the ball with their
hands!)
Goalkeepers also wear different shorts or pants than other players
– again, these are padded and made to protect a goalie as
he or she dives for a ball.
