The
American term “soccer moms” was supposedly coined by
a woman running for city council in Denver, Colorado. When asked
what her credentials were, she replied simply, “soccer mom.”
In the 1990s, especially the 1992 and 1996 presidential election,
“soccer moms” became a widespread term and has been
popular since.
It can actually be found in many dictionaries, one example being:
“soccer mom”
n.
An American mother living in the suburbs whose time is often spent
transporting her children from one athletic activity or event to
another
In cultural, social and political discourse of the United States,
soccer mom refers to the broadly demographic group of women with
school-aged kids. She is typically imagined as upper/ middle class,
with a college education, and living in suburban or exurban areas.
Because soccer is considered to be a safer and somewhat more genteel
sport than, for example, American football (which is more mainstream
in this country), a soccer mom is supposedly a somewhat overprotective,
yet encouraging figure. She makes personal sacrifices for her children’s
benefit, over scheduling herself to make sure everyone gets to their
games and practices on time.
While the term is basically a stereotype, “soccer moms”
is a convenient word to use for parents in this situation.
On a more literal level, soccer moms are simply mothers of their
young soccer players. If you are in the position of being one of
these soccer moms, help your child in the sport with encouragement
and participation.
You can attend his or her games and practices, cheer from the sidelines,
and speak well of other players and the coach to encourage a sportsmanlike
attitude.
