So you want to go out and by yourself some soccer shinguards, not
realizing that you are a bit to step into a much larger ordeal than
you bargained for. Just like with cereal and deodorant, there is
more than one type of shinguard (and there are even more brands).
There are basic, cheap hard-shell soccer shinguards that simply
strap around your calf with a velcro strap. These do provide basic
protection, but they certainly are not ideal. If you’re just
playing around for fun with some pals, these may be just fine. But
you wouldn’t want to strap them on for a serious soccer game.
A better choice for serious soccer players are soccer shinguards
with a few more bells and whistles. Shinguards that attach with
2 wide straps rather than just one are going to stay in place much
better. There will be no slipping and sliding with this sort of
shinguard. Also, a shinguard with ankleguards or protectors is a
definite plus, perhaps even a must.
Since people playing soccer are playing the game down at the feet,
this is where the potential for injury is most. It is best to prevent
injury on all levels. It can be easy to twist an ankle while playing
soccer. Soccer shinguards with ankleguards help prevent against
such a fate.
If you are buying soccer shinguards for a youth, you may want to
consider getting socks with the shinguard and ankleguard sewn in.
Then there’s one less thing for your child to lose as she
makes the transition from soccer field to play room.
Assuming that you’re not wearing the socks with built in
shinguards, it is also worthy to note that it is important to wear
socks over your soccer shinguards. Tall soccer socks will help hold
the shinguard in place, even when hit by the toughest kicks.
