The
terms “soccer skill” and “soccer technique”
should not be used interchangeably, although many people do. They
do, in fact, refer to different parts of your soccer game.
A player with great skill is able to succeed in using a particular
technique or techniques during real game situations. On the other
hand, soccer technique refers to a player’s ability to perform
a specific mechanical motion. The technique may be a kick, trap,
or throw, etc.
Good players may have a lot of technique, but great skilled players
are able to string those bits of technique together during a game.
Of course, almost by definition, to have soccer skill, one must
first master soccer technique.
As they say, “practice makes perfect.” The best way
to improve soccer technique is to practice. To improve, you can
repeat the same thing over and over, observe someone else doing
it correctly, and even visualize how it should be done. The more
you practice a soccer technique, the more the motion becomes a natural
one for the body, and the easier it will be able to do when the
time is right.
It is useful to watch professional soccer games or even soccer
training videos, too. You could also just watch your coach or another
teammate who has perfected a technique. You can really learn by
watching better players.
You can work on your soccer technique even while at home or riding
the bus. Visualization or mental imagery is a new way to improve
your technique, and it can really do wonders for a player. You can
visualize exactly how you would approach the ball, what your body
will do and look like as you go in for the kick, and how you will
feel when you make it. There is also mental imagery that you can
do to calm yourself before a big game.
The more that a player practices his soccer dribbling, throw-ins,
passing and receiving, soccer moves, soccer positions, and soccer
positions, the more that player will begin to see an improvement
in his technique.
And the more a person practices his soccer technique, the more
likely that player will become skilled in it, able to link it to
other techniques to go ahead and help his team win the game.
