Although Spain may mostly be known for their bulls – bull-fighting
and the running of the bulls, Spain also has quite a reputation
for their soccer teams. And the great thing is (or bad, depending
on how you look at it), regardless of whether or not a soccer team
wins or loses, no bulls are killed!
The Spanish league competition began in 1928, but it was suspended
for 3 years from 1936 to 1949 during the Spanish Civil War. All
in all, there have been 72 seasons, including 2005. Out of those
72 seasons, only 9 teams have won the league.
Real Madrid has been the champions 29 times! It’s no wonder
that in Major League Soccer in the USA, the Real Salt Lake team
took their name after the Real Madrid (probably hoping that some
of the Spanish soccer teams luck and skill would come with the name).
The Spanish cup competition, now known as the King’s Cup
(Copa del Rey) began in 1902 and has been played every season, except
for 1937 and 1938 (during the Spanish Civil War). Of course, in
a sense, the lack of competitions in those two years was made up
for by the fact that 2 competitions were played in 1910 and 1913.
Strangely, in 1904, Athletic Bilbao were named winners without a
final even being played! The team with the most titles is FC Barcelona.
They have won 24 times.
Overall, soccer, aka football, has been played in Spain for over
100 years. The national team has not yet won a World Cup, but they
have come close. Recently, during the 1998 World Cup quarter finals,
Spain carried on their impressive form in the period leading up
to the 1998 World Cup in France, winning eight and drawing the other
two of their qualifying games, and only losing one friendly out
of four, to France.
