ABU DHABI — Bahrain were aptly crowned winners of the inaugural
Arab Women’s football sevens championship after a battling
3-2 triumph in the final over Abu Dhabi Sports Club here at the
Military stadium on Monday night.
Bahrain’s win extended their wining streak to six-out-of-six
in the week-long championship held under the patronage of Foreign
Minister Shaikh Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
They posted convincing victories over the national teams of Lebanon
and Palestine, Arab Communities and Jordan’s Orthodox Club
to top group B, and then thrashed Syria 4-0 in the semis.
Marwa Al Shaikh opened scoring for Bahrain and former Egyptian
international Sarah Husnein cancelled it for a 1-1 score at half
time.
Marwa regained the lead from a spot kick following a handball of
her own shot at the Abu Dhabi goal and Zain Al Khalifa made it 3-1
before Sarah pulled one back with a fine header in the dying stages
of the game.
The Bahrain lasses were fast, fit and the more creative on the
field, although the host team gave them a good run for the money,
incidentally Dh200,000 from a total purse of over Dh555,000.
“The better team won and we were the best team in the competition.
We won all our games quite convincingly. We had a bit of a nervy
start but we played better football from there onwards,” said
Bahrain’s two-goal heroin Marwa.
“Winning this championship will give women’s football
a great fillip. We hope to step up from this performance and I’m
sure we have the potential in the region to improve from now. The
UAE were great host and I’m hopeful this championship becomes
a permanent fixture in the women’s football calendar of events.”
The championship drew 10 teams and was worked of at the Armed Forces
Officers Club and the adjoining Military stadium. The Abu Dhabi
Sports Club represented the UAE, fielding national women and two
foreign professionals in the squad.
Lebanon took the play off for third by defeating Syria 3-1 in a
penalty shoot out after the game ended scoreless.
