Stuart
Downing of Middlesbrough is set to sign a new contract with the
Tyneside outfit which would see him stay with the club until 2010.
Downing, who has attracted attention from Spurs, had his agent meet
with ‘Boro chiefs to try and hammer out an agreement. ‘Boro
have recently rejected a bid from Tottenham despite Downing rejecting
two previous contract offers.
Downing’s agent, Ian Elliot believes that the player was
not being offered the deal he deserved because he was a home- grown
talent. Elliot also alleged that the new offer was a u-turn by the
club after they had previously stated that there would be no further
offers.
Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb believes the player will
sign the new five year deal on his return from Portugal next week.
It will come as good news to Middlesbrough supporters, as they
will keep the England debutant and one of the brightest young talents
in British football.
