Everton
have had their wish granted and avoided neighbours Liverpool in
the draw for the third qualifying round of The Champions League
but have undoubtedly been handed the toughest task of progressing
of all the British clubs other that is than of Celtic coming back
from 0-5 down to take their place in the draw.
The blue side of Liverpool will pitch up against Spanish side Villarreal
who qualified by finishing third in last seasons La Liga as well
as reaching the quarter finals of the Uefa cup. They have ex Manchester
United forward Diego Forlan in their ranks. Everton play the first
leg at Goodison Park.
If Liverpool see off Kaunas of Lithuania in the second leg of their
current tie they look likely to face Bulgarians CSKA Sofia. Liverpool
are leading Kaunas 3-1. CSKA hold a 2-0 lead over Tirana of Albania.
Liverpool would play the first leg at Anfield.
Manchester United’s likely opponents are Debrecen from Hungary
who carry a 3-0 lead into their deciding leg over Hajduk Split.
Debrecen qualified as runners up from their domestic competition.
The first leg is at Old Trafford. Debrecen look set to move the
second leg to Budapest if they overcome the challenge for Hajduk
Split and progress.
Scottish champions Rangers could be on their way to Cyprus if Anorthosis
can win through against Trabzonspor of Turkey from the 3-1 lead
they take into the second leg. Rangers must travel away for the
first leg.
If Gordon Strachan really can pull a rabbit out of the hat and
lead Celtic to a second leg six goal victory over Artmedia Bratislava
the reward is a first leg trip to either Partizan Belgrade of Sheriff
of Moldova.
