Former
Liverpool and Swiss international defender Stephane Henchoz is set
to put pen to paper on a deal that will see him sign for Premiership
new boys Wigan Athletic.
Henchoz travelled with the Latics on their pre-season tour of Denmark
to prove his fitness and now manager Paul Jewell is hopeful of having
a two year contact filed away in the next 24 hours.
The defender played out last season at Celtic after crossing the
border in January but after making only two starts in Glasgow is
looking for a move back to the Premiership.
Henchoz first played in the Premiership when he joined Blackburn
Rovers in a £3million transfer from Hamburg in 1997. He then
moved to Anfield for £3.5million in 2000 making over 200 appearances
on Merseyside.
Once the move is complete Henchoz could stand against the Chelsea
attack on opening day along with Jewell’s other back line
recruits, goalkeeper Mike Pollitt from Rotherham and defenders Pascal
Chimbonda from Bastia and Ryan Taylor from Tranmere Rovers.
