Nike
Inc. announced Tuesday it will donate up to $300,000 to help 20
Los Angeles Unified schools, including six in the San Fernando Valley,
convert available space into hard-court soccer fields.
The athletic shoemaker giant will provide benches, two goals and
will paint the soccer courts at 10 elementary and 10 middle schools.
The following San Fernando Valley schools will receive a court:
Mulholland Middle School, Sutter Middle School, Andasol Avenue Middle
School, Chatsworth Park Elementary School, Stonehurst Avenue Elementary
School and San Fernando Elementary School.
Each school - which was selected based on whether it had available
hard-court space - will also receive 20 soccer balls.
"Both elementary and middle schools have very limited play
space and usually you have kids running in all directions to find
space to eke out an area to play," school board member Mike
Lansing said. "And if we're strategic about this... we'll start
looking at it as a start to a process (to) develop an after-school
intramural sports program for students. I think we need to have
a lot more than what we offer from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., especially
at the secondary level."
The principal at Chatsworth Elementary said the school welcomed
the soccer field and hoped it would encourage more students to take
part in physical activities.
"I'm certainly an advocate of a healthy lifestyle for children,"
Principal Elizabeth Cervantes said. "This ... we hope will
enable more students to know more about soccer and improve their
own physical fitness."
