This
past weekend marked the start of the U14 spring season as well as
the ongoing U18 season.
On Sunday, March 5, the MYSA Lazio team from McMinnville traveled
to Lincoln City to take on Lincoln United U18. LUFC had lost to
MYSA in their first meeting earlier this season. The game started
with MYSA scoring on a corner kick within the first minute of play.
McMinnville jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Patrick Broudin, of
Taft, scored on a breakaway shot to the far post.
Just two minutes later Patrick Neff of Newport took a Mariano Melo
cross and slid it past the MYSA goalie on a picture perfect slide.
The first half ended 3-2.
"For the first time all season LUFC played in their lanes
and maintained position," coach and spokesperson for the Central
Coast Soccer Association Bob Bambrick said. "MYSA scoring came
on defensive breakdowns when the midfield failed to get back into
defensive position leaving McMinnville with numbers over the LUFC
defense."
Throughout the second half LUFC controlled much of the possession,
but could not finish on many scoring opportunities. LUFC had nine
shots on goal in the second half alone. MYSA managed just three
shots on goal in the second half, but finished on two of them. The
score ended 5-2.
"Despite the score, United played its best game of the year,"
Bambrick said. "We're finally seeing some improvement and people
are playing their positions and staying in their lanes."
LUFC travels to Willamette University to take on Cascade FC. Cascade
FC prevailed in the first meeting 1-0. On Sunday, March 12, LUFC
plays at home at the Pit taking on the OSA Strikers at 2p.m. The
strikers won the first contest 3-0 and LUFC will be without starting
goalie Ben Waite who is interviewing with colleges on Sunday.
Under-14 team travels to Hood River
On Saturday March 4, Lincoln United U14 traveled to Hood River
to take on The Hood River Eagles in the Spring OYSA competitive
league. Joel Cortez of Taft Middle School scored with 18 minutes
left in the first half on a beautiful shot to the far post from
18 yards out. Minutes later Hood River was awarded a penalty kick
when their striker was brought down in the goal area.
Rookie goalie Ryan Bambrick stopped the penalty kick and any rebound
attempt on a fantastic piece of goaltending, according to Bob Bambrick.
Minutes later Hood River scored on a shot to the far post to tie
the score at the break.
The teams split possession during the second half and both had
six shots on goal. Titus Linzy of Tidewater scored on a botched
goalie save with 15 minutes to go giving LU the lead 2-1. With just
three minutes remaining Hood River made a hard shot on goal and
Jeremiah Borton deflected it into LU's goal for an own goal.
"Both teams played well and the contest ended in a 2-2 tie.
Lincoln United U14 is now has one win, one tie and zero losses for
the season as they benefited from a forfeit the first week of the
season. LU travels to Hillsboro on Saturday, March 11 and plays
at home this Sunday, March 12 at Newport middle school at 1 p.m.
Lincoln United is the competitive club soccer team of the Central
Coast Soccer Association. Teams are comprised of players from Newport,
Lincoln City and South County.
