RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Franz Beckenbauer said Brazil would be
capable of hosting the 2014 World Cup if it bids for the tournament.
Beckenbauer, president of the World Cup organizing committee, even
offered his advice to help the country present its case to FIFA.
"I'll be available," Beckenbauer said late Friday. "If
you need a consultant, you can count on me."
Brazil is likely to try to host the event, which would mark the
centenary of the Brazilian Soccer Confederation. The only time the
World Cup took place in Brazil was in 1950.
Soccer's world governing body rotates the award of the World Cup
around its member confederations. With South Africa winning for
2010, South America is in line for 2014.
Beckenbauer visited Brazil as part of his global tour of countries
playing in the June 9-July 9 World Cup in Germany. His next stop
will be Trinidad and Tobago.
On Thursday, Beckenbauer left his footprints at Maracana stadium's
"sidewalk of fame," a section of the famed stadium dedicated
to the memory of top players.
